Critics Consensus

The Patriot can be entertaining to watch, but it relies too much on formula and melodrama.

Many graphic battle scenes, not for all teens. Go to Full Review

The main irony, of course, lies in the film's title, which suggests that the absurdly flag-waving activist should be taken at face value despite the ample evidence that defending his country is the last thing on his mind. Go to Full Review

Emmerich's battle scenes may look authentic to anyone who has ever stared hard at a history book, but in every other way the film is long, empty and bogus. Go to Full Review

Jeremy H @hansonink85 4h Great movie!! The only reason why the film is rated R is because of the war violence. See more SurvivorAlways 7 @MyLife4Me79 6h This movie does not get enough love or attention. Great acting all around. Great action and really touching and tender at times. Gets you in the feels. See more Guy B @RT04766479 7h Disney meets Rambo. Gibson madness masked behind a John Williams lullaby See more G L @RT09869090 9h A great movie to watch every Fourth of July, just ignore the historical inaccuracies. See more Stoner J @Stoner 17h A great, and enragingly underrated revolutionary war family drama thriller. It’s a great film with surprisingly historical accuracy. See more Bojack H @RT55952351 18h This is one of my favorite movies of all time. From start to finish it is a captivating, high stakes, morally compelling war drama. Purely for the only thing that matters in a movie, there is not a single thing to complain about it as entertainment. Every gripe I see is "pRoPoGaNdA" and "iTs nOt hIsToRiCaLlY aCcUrAtE". Okay Redditor. Go be a basement dwelling intellectual somewhere else. It’s a DRAMA. It’s not a biopic. It’s not a documentary. It never claimed to be. If you think like a critic, every movie sucks because it’s not a boring sack of garbage finely detailed to your sophisticated pallet, while the audience hates it. You ever notice that every movie critics love sucks? It’s because critics don’t know what makes movies good. This is a great film. The British were very cruel. Historically accurate. The revolutionary war was messy, split families apart and had measurable personal human suffering. That’s all here. Enjoy the movie and don’t be a baby like the critics. See more Read all reviews
