Much of the film’s appeal stems from the sizzling energy and sharp dialogue, a lot of which was improvised on the spot by Murphy. Go to Full Review

This lickety-split action comedy is distinguished by the wry, character-conscious direction of Martin Brest, who coaxes a silver-bullet performance from star Eddie Murphy that's practically criminal in its accuracy. Go to Full Review

Murphy exudes the kind of cheeky, cocky charm that has been missing from the screen since Cagney was a pup, snarling his way out of the ghetto. Go to Full Review

Just sheer enjoyment. It leaves you with the pleasurable afterglow of being in the company of someone who makes you laugh even when he's being vicious. Go to Full Review

See more Damon G @Dmoney420 Feb 22 Classic comedy super funny and entertaining Eddie Murphy is super hilarious See more Nick B @Yoshmin64 Feb 13 Beverly Hills Cop is still a timeless classic — funny, irreverent, and endlessly entertaining. It’s lightning in a bottle, and you can easily see why it dominated the box office in 1984. It arguably perfected the action-comedy formula. 48 Hrs. comes close, but Beverly Hills Cop operates on another level. It’s impossible to imagine anyone other than a young, hungry Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley. As much as I admire Stallone, this simply wasn’t the right vehicle for him. Fate instead gave Murphy the opportunity to become a superstar, and he seized it. The supporting cast is equally strong, with standout performances from John Ashton, Judge Reinhold, Lisa Eilbacher, and Ronny Cox. Steven Berkoff makes a perfectly slimy villain and an ideal foil for Axel. The plot is simple but engaging, and the blend of action and comedy feels effortless. Martin Brest’s direction is stylish, and Harold Faltermeyer’s score is iconic. This was the first Eddie Murphy film I saw, and it remains my favorite. See more D P @RT45936356 Jan 24 I'm just now getting around to seeing it. I'm sure it was a gem at the time it was released, but I can only rate it according to my current perspective. And currently, I see it as mildly entertaining. Eddie is just naturally funny, though. He's a hoot in anything he is in, regardless of the quality of the overall product. See more Read all reviews
