Will Mann's "Miami Vice" Sink or Swim?
While Michael Mann still has a month to polish his big-screen undercover cop flick, "Miami Vice," Fox News' Roger Friedman is predicting a box office stinker, according to a secret studio source.
Friedman's naysaying insider cites a ballooning budget ($125 million, at the lowest) -- despite Mann's reported avoidance of expensive special effects:
Gong Li and Colin Farrell generate some "Miami" heat
The source also places blame on Mann's helming of the pic:
Reports of a troubled "Vice" production are nothing new, as even before filming started rumors flew of over-budgeting, Mann's perfectionist tendencies, and the off-set partying of A-list stars Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell (see previous man-boobs report).

No visible man-boobs, but Farrell is sporting a very troubling pseudo-mullet
To be fair, Hollywood Elsewhere's Jeffrey Wells counters Friedman's boxoffice doomsday forecast, pointing to film critic F.X. Feeney's positive reaction to an early cut. Wells also shows his personal approval of all things Mann -- and with an unusually Fresh directorial Tomatometer (76% with 11 rated films, most in the 80s and higher), Michael Mann's track record is definitely deserving of respect.
"Miami Vice" slips into theaters July 28.

"The remake of the 1980s TV series cost $125 million, 'and that's what we're admitting to,' says a source at Universal Pictures. 'It's probably more like $150 million.'"

"No matter what Mann's done so far in editing, sources tell me 'Miami Vice' still comes across as a good-looking empty shell of a movie."

on Jun 21 2006 05:32 PM Lets get real. This movie will swim like a fish. Foxx and Mann back together for the 3rd time. That has hit all over it. Fox said the same thing about Manns last film. Look at how good that movie was. No one will see the final print until mann is ready. People have just been seeing clips. (Reply to this) |
![]() on Jun 21 2006 05:59 PM I can't see this film doing exceptionally well... perhaps a big first weekend, but typical 'summer blockbuster' legs to follow. I have to agree with Friedman. (Reply to this) |
![]() on Jun 21 2006 06:52 PM Miami Vice I loved the TV series Miami Vice because Crockett and Tubbs were so approachable and down to earth. They weren't dark underwordly characters. There is no way that Michael Mann can ever approach the wonderfully inventive and media changing episodes of 1984-1989. He must be an egomaniacal fool. (Reply to this) |

on Jun 21 2006 07:45 PM Wow. People are hateing already. Face it. This film will be a big hit. many people want to see. Seeing that mann wrote alot of the tv series, he is the right one to do this. This is the first movie he has wrote by him self since heat. Do you reallt think he is going to fuck something he help start back in the 80s up. Mann has not let us down yet. Why would he start with this one. The way the movie was shot will make people want to see even more. It will be a hit, just like man other film. People just want a movie to hate on. The same thing happend with superman, look at it Now. It is funny to me. Rotten is only posting the people who did not see the hole film. The 28 people that saw the hole and might be the final cut of the film loved it. From what i read is that the hole 152 min film is really good. But that is just what i read. (Reply to this) |

on Jun 22 2006 06:53 AM In reply to this comment (#838585) I have to agree with you, daycare. Michael Mann is directing a movie that is based on his TV show, so there's no reason why everyone should be so down on it. It's the fact that there are too many remakes going around, and no one has faith in it. That's what it is. But when you have remakes of "War of the Worlds" and "King Kong" doing well with critics and B.O., one thing is clear: remakes should be helmed by stronger directors instead of music video directors or hacks. on Jun 22 2006 10:01 AM In reply to this comment (#838579) The Keep I am a big Mann fan, but he has at least one stinker on his Director's resume - 1983's The Keep, with Ian McKellen. A period horror film; after the first third, it goes downhill quickly. (Reply to this) |

on Jun 22 2006 03:05 PM I don't care if it's a hit or a bomb at the box office; Heat didn't do too well in that area but it was a magnificent picture. I like good movies, and good movies don't always go down well with the summer movie blockbuster crowd. Lots of boo-hoos from the studio execs will follow, but at least it reduces the chances of the movie spawning loads of god-awful sequels. (Reply to this) |

on Jun 22 2006 03:22 PM Collateral. Though Mann has directed other great movies, seeing the trailer for Miami Vice makes me think that this movie will be very similar to Collateral. Ironically, I just watched it today for like the 10th time (one of my favorite movies) and I am still in awe of how perfectly it's filmed, edited, and in my opinion, acted. Anyone who has doubts about Mann's directing abilitly should watch that movie, and then tell me if you think there's any doubt that Mann knows what he's doing. He knows how to direct a thriller and it will be 10 better than any of the other shit out there now. He is a master of the action-thriller genre. (Reply to this) |
