Marvel Preps "Uber" Captain America

Stephen Colbert may hang Captain America's shield on his shelf, but for most people the idea of the ultimate patriotic superhero may be problematic in today's political climate. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige is ready to deal with that when he brings the comic book hero to the screen.

"I think we'll certainly have to play with that and play with Captain America being this patriotic propaganda machine on one hand but also be a very human Steve Rogers, interesting, fascinating hero in his own right," said Feige while on the set of still in-production "Iron Man."

Luckily, even our enemies may unite for comic books. "The good news is Marvel is perceived pretty well around the world right now and I think putting another uber Marvel hero into the worldwide box office will be a good thing."

Times always change, so this will only be the most recent universe Rogers has faced in his red, white and blue crusade. "The script, the director that we end up hiring, certainly we're going into it with our eyes open but these are all things we have to deal with, much the same way that Captain America when thawed from the arctic ice entered a world he didn't recognize and had to deal with the changes, whether it was when Stan [Lee] did it in the early '60s and that world Steve Rogers was coming into, or the world of 2009."

Speaking of which, would a new Captain America be period or modern? "Right now what we're developing would be about half and half I'd say."

Might work as a fish out of water story. And please leave Red Skull out of it. Unless he's there to kill Billy of course.

I cans see it now...Capt. America: Kill Billy Vol. 1 :). Seriously though if they do this right it could be really good. I think the screenwriter is going to be everything on this one.

Please give more credit to Jack Kirby and Joe Simon. They deserve it. I would prefer this take place in the forties. Having it set in present time would not work. Captain America in present time would be laughed at.

Nice try, Baron Zemo "killed" Bucky.

except that Bucky didn't really die and now he's the Summer Soldier.

I don't think they need to have Bucky at all anyways or really the Red Skull or anybody that would look cartoony.

And I think that a great period piece about WWII would be a good idea, and then (like Forever Young and other stories) in the comics Cap'n America is out of commission for a while- frozen and then re-animated. The contrast between the period piece and the modern world would look great and the good Cap'n would have to adjust to what America means in the present time and what patriotism means. This has the potential to be really good, CGI shield and all.

I think it could work, but why stick to the comic story when the script writers coudl make something much more ridiculous?

Wasn't it Baron Strucker who set the plane off that killed Bucky? It doesn't really matter since except for a few differences they're all the same villain and wasn't Bucky the Winter Soldier? or did they change that when he deprogrammed? I agree I think the half and half will be interesting.

How interesting can they possibly make this character? He is laughable as a superhero and only holds novelty value for old-time war propoganda. I say keep him off of film. I smell another DD on our hands.

Most people could care less about the death of Captain America. Another Marvel Comics Rip-off. DC did it already with Superman. People were curious about that. But you probably weren't born yet. Get a life please.

so are they really gonna go with the "frozen in a block of ice" angle? it may have been believable years ago, but i don't think people will easily buy into that these days. i'd rather see either a period film like a World War II era film or even a modern film. the "frozen in ice" angle is too "out there". i can see a Rocketeer-esque WWII Captain America film, but if they go with a modern film that deals with terrorism and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the plot could go something like this:

they can make Steve Rogers a willing and extremely patriotic volunteer for a burgeoning super solider program to aid in fighting the war on terrorism, he becomes Captain America, then he becomes disillusioned with how the war is going, but "rediscovers" his patriotism and becomes not just some super solider, bit a symbol of the ideals and principles America stands for. not only could Captain America be an inspiration to Americans to become more patriotic, but an inspiration to people of other countries to become more patriotic in their own countries as well.

Cant wait for this! And it better be good! I got great ideas for a Captain America storyline set in modern day. But they will never hear about it so, big loss.

Unfortunately, there are too many people in other countries that hate America's guts. Most people aren't patriotic to begin with. The way this country operates is a disgrace to Americans and people from around the world. Laws can be broken and the so called president of the United States just sweeps it under the rug. Patriotism is basically dead and a fictional character named Captain America is not about to change the way things are.

A half and half story sounds terrible to me, and I wouldn't even want one of those movies. I would stick with it being completely in the 40s. It has so much more potential that way, and wouldn't get caught up in the politics of today.
