Maybe We Won't See That Barbarella Remake After All
by | July 03, 2008

Summary

It's just a story in the gossip rags right now, but rumor has it that Robert Rodriguez and Rose McGowan have split -- which throws the future of their Barbarella and Red Sonja remakes into doubt, to say the least. Back to Article

While the news is interesting, that guy is completely obnoxious. Next time link to someone else.

I totally disagree with him about McGowan, while she hasn't done that much yet, she was really great in both halves of Grindhouse. I'd take her over Alba in any movie.

I find it extremely curious that this guy is lamenting the lack of A-List talent lining up to be involved in a re-make of Barbarella...

..Kind of like getting angry and confused that Dustin Hoffman and Al Pacino have both turned down the role of 'M. Bison' in the Street Fighter remake*.

"JESUS! What, aren't there any A-Listers who want to play the meglomaniacal cartoonish super-villain in a videogame adaptation opposite Kristen Kreuk!?!"

*I made this up to prove a point. I don't know that the role has been offered to either.

I hope he does Sin City 2 now! Also I understand why studios wouldnt wanna back this movie with Rose, I mean 80 mil for a movie starring a C lister, even though she was awesome in Grindhouse and she probably would have been cool in this. And please someone tell me why Alba is an A lister, most of her movies bomb (Awake, Love Guru, The Eye, and im sure a bunch of other flicks), and she is usually a critical dud (F4 1 & 2, Awake, Love Guru, The Eye, Honey, Into the blue, and im sure a bunch of other movies. I think Alba sucks and would ruin this movie, and I think Rose would have done awesome but she really isnt a known actress. Also yeah that article is pretty mean.

And now she has denied the split AND that she's out of any of the upcoming RR projects. Sounds like this whole story may just be bogus.

I don't think either of them, McGowan and Alba, are all that talented. I'd rather see a talented up and comer get the role. Elizabeth Harnois would be my first choice. I like that girl.

While I agree with most above points, they all overlook the fact that this is certainly one film that shouldn't be re-made. While I love Rodriguez and nearly everything of his I've seen, he has almost zero chance of succeeding with this project. The original is one of the most awesome and baffling movies ever made. I say baffling because you spend half the time watching it trying to figure out if it is all a joke or not, half the time marveling at the production design, and half the the time ridiculing it (the pd). Yes, I know that is three halves...thats just the kind of movie. What makes Barbarella so awesome is that it doesn't seem to know what kind of movie it wants to be>... a comedy, a fantasy, a porno, a space adventure, or a psychedelic dream. If you haven't seen this movie watch it...just make sure you have a buddy with you to crack jokes.

I hope this movie happens. I like the original barbarella but I can't say it was a good film. I had it's moments (the opening titles sequence, the love making) and the set and costume desing is very trippy and weird but it isn't funny, satirical or even (and worst of all) erotic enough to completely ejoy the whole thing. Rodriguez's take on the material could be awesome and I think McGowan is a fine actor and choice to play the part (way better suited than Alba).

My personal choice would be Alexis Bledel. It might sound out of place but she has that mix of sweetness and naivety that I think the character needs. Besides she is gorgeous!

I'm hoping RR came to his senses. I enjoyed Rose in Grindhouse but I don't want him to not work on any material that didn't involve her. Get me on Machete on DVD already and have a heart to heart with Quentin on how to sleep with your female stars and not fall in love.
