What to Know

Critics Consensus

A twisty mystery that grows more addictive as it unfolds, Down Cemetery Road is tonally imbalanced but has a steadfast center of gravity in Emma Thompson's flinty star turn.

There’s a playful and witty way to how Slow Horses writer Morwenna Banks, who developed this series, presents Bond-worthy escapades on a slightly more humdrum level. Go to Full Review

Down Cemetery Road has its moments, but overall is a reminder that what Slow Horses does is a lot harder than it appears. Go to Full Review

With a mix of compulsive storytelling and two commanding performances from its female leads, Down Cemetery Road is a winner. Go to Full Review

The dialogue is often crisply snarky, though the tone can wobble unsuccessfully between sinister and goofy. Thompson keeps you watching, though. Go to Full Review

How could this go wrong? Wrong may not be the optimal word, but uninteresting is. Bloated at 10 episodes and obtuse in the underlying mystery, Down Cemetery Road is not engaging. Go to Full Review

The series is captivating, weaving a thriller within a thriller in a seemingly endless succession of revelations and secrets. However, the story is hampered by a poorly integrated group of characters. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Eric N @EricNix Jan 30 Although not quite in the same league as Slow Horses, Down Cemetery Road is an entertaining and exhilarating ride. The acting by all concerned is excellent, including what many reviewers characterize as "cartoon villains." For me, all the cartoonish-ness was highly entertaining and actually made me laugh in several spots. I notice that most of the negative reviews on here are from men, many of whom seem to have gotten their boxers in a twist from having two women outwit a bunch of mostly incompetent men. If that's a problem for you, I suggest you skip Down Cemetery Road. Also, if you don't like a fair amount of gratuitous violence, you might also want to give this a pass. However, if those caveats aren't a problem, dig in and enjoy a fun, twisty show. I'm already getting excited for season 2! See more Ken D @mynameisken Jan 29 wtf was the point of Sarah....? See more Zahid T @Zahid2025 Jan 25 oh please oh, please cancel this rubbish show! See more Richard B Jan 23 Everyday Misandry This Mick Herron adaptation suffers from comparison with Slow Horses and an over complex plot told thru a twisted feminist perspective. It is entertaining and has a pretty fierce ending, but it badly marred by its endless complications (many of which are not satisfying), annoying shifts in tone (which SH does perfectly). But by far the most annoying thing is the consistent portrayal of men as dunces, sadistic, horny, untrustworthy and hateful towards women, while the women are all geniuses or saints, brave a bold - in other words, Mary Sues. You can watch this and ignore, or even sympathise with the characters. But if the sexes were reversed, you'd NEVER get this show made. Entertaining twaddle. See more Kasia K @KatyRoseSmith Jan 17 The plot is gripping enough and the two main characters reminiscent of Slow Horses set up, a seemingly incompetent but driven maniac one and a lippy and grumpy one with all the best one-liners. The real let-down of the show are the cartoonish villains, also mirroring the same set up of one incompetent one and one with clipped, clever one-liners, except these are truly tiresome. Emma Thompson is the only thing truly worth watching, the sassiness of her character entertaining. Still don't know what happened to the cat which is criminal, IMO. See more Linda S @LindaSep Jan 16 Highly underwhelming. Had to fast forward through the "bad guy scenes" because of overacting and ridiculous dialogue. I give it a hard pass.
