George W @georgeblaise Apr 1 A good show with excellent actors but it's hard to give a flip about these two self-righteous jejune terrorists and makes this viewer wish they'd been hanged or faced a firing squad. See more Rue C @Rue96 Dec 12 Solid, believable performances throughout, but overall it felt like an everyday story of psychopaths, on all sides. Callow, brutal and damaged lives begetting violence all in pursuit of their own thrashing tails. I found the sisterly bond moving, but ultimately could not take Dolours to heart. Her inviolable sense of purpose faltering only when she met Stephen Rea - then the whole horror and self rationalisation begins. Fantastic portrayal of the detached logic of Finan’s Gerry Adams Peake’s older Dolours sustained her NI accent. Not documentary, fictive, fact-based fiction, not sure what this series wanted from its audience - violated observers, like Rea, implicated by their curiosity? Highly reccomend See more Micah S @RT37206706 Nov 9 I randomly picked up the book that this series was based on during a holiday one year (lol I know, not a vacation read really) and I found it so gripping. Even though it’s all true history, the author really transported you into the setting and the minds of the principal historical actors. I think the show has also done this very faithfully. If anything, we grow even closer and understand better the workings of these people’s minds, especially Doulours Price. The production and all the performances were really top-notch and by acting out the heists and the heists, abductions, bombings, etc. that the IRA members participated in the audience really gets to participate in that frenzied, rebellious spirit. However I do think there is one thing that this show is lacking. I remember at one point in the book the author diverged from the storyline of his main “characters” and delved into the story of the “14 days” - a particularly bloody time in the troubles where many people were murdered during funeral processions for IRA members. There is an extremely evocative picture in the book of a priest, Father Reid, bending down in the street and delivering the last rites to British occupying officers that were killed by the funeral attendees. That image really stuck with me. The book established the wider effects of the troubles on the general populace on the time. There were many descriptions of how bombings at shopping malls and in car parks would result in the killing of ordinary civilians. Although Jean McConville’s story is kept in to explore this theme, I don’t think that the average viewer would appreciate how the average citizen in Belfast or Derry or really anywhere in Ireland was just sick and weary of the violence, and also the state of fear that people existed in for so long.
