  • An actor since the age of 14, Berlin-born Jürgen Prochnow was firmly established on stage and TV when he was featured in his first film, Zoff, in 1971. Prochnow has been able to harness his well-modulated voice, versatile facial features, and athletic frame to portray both the most admirable of heroes and the most despicable of villains. It was for his portrayal of a character in the former category that the actor achieved international fame. He appeared as the stern but humanistic submarine commander in the 1981 Oscar-winning Das Boot. In the latter category, Prochnow all but entreated hisses and tossed tomatoes with his portrayal of the sadistic South African secret police captain in 1989's A Dry White Season. Prochnow's career has subsequently had its fair share of highs and lows, with his appearances in such high profile projects as The English Patient (1996), Air Force One (1997), and The Replacement Killers (1998) helping to sustain him as a fixture in international cinema. Over the coming decades, Prochnow would remain an active force on screen, appearing in a host of German projects, as well as projects like The Da Vinci Code and Beerfest, and the TV series 24.

QUOTES FROM Jürgen Prochnow CHARACTERS

The Capt.
It had to be like that. Not nice, things like that. But it had to be like that...
Lt. Werner/Correspondent
Why?
The Capt.
...Excuse me?
Lt. Werner/Correspondent
-Why did it have to be like that?
The Capt.
...Because our boat is barely enough for the 50 men we need here! How many men would you have taken in?! One? Ten? One hundred?! We are ordered to sink ships where we find them. You can ask the men who started this war about the rest...
Woermann
Request immediate relocation. Something is murdering my men.
Duke Leto Atreides

(on the bus with John Trent) - I'm not going anywhere. I'm God now. You understand?

John Trent
God's not supposed to be a hack horror writer.
Sutter Cane
But maybe I can help you believe. Look around when you wake up. Did I ever tell you my favorite color was blue? (Everything on the bus turns blue)
John Trent
(frightened) - Aaaaahhhhhhh!!!

Do you want to know the problem with places like this...With religion in general? It's never known how to convey the anatomy of horror. Religion seeks discipline through fear...yet doesn't understand the true nature of creation. No one's ever believed it enough to make it real. The same cannot be said of my world.

Your books aren't real.
Sutter Cane
But they've sold over a billion copies. I've been translated into eighteen languages. More people believe in my work than believe in the Bible.
John Trent
You got a point.
Sutter Cane
I think you know it.
John Trent
There has to be some kind of an explanation...for what I've seen tonight. I'll sort this shit out later, but right now...there has to be some kind of a simple fu**ing explanation.

Always looking for the con. Even now you're trying to rationalize.
John Trent
Anyway...your books suck.

You must try reading my new one. The others have had quite an effect...but this one will drive you absolutely mad.

You can edit this one from the inside, looking out. It's funny, isn't it? For years, I thought I was making all this up. But they were telling me what to write...giving me the power to make it all real. And now it is...All those horrible, slimy things...trying to get back in? They're all true. Come. See the instrument of their homecoming. What you have come looking for. The new Bible...that starts the change...helps you see.

This is a rotten way to end it.
