Matthew D @OceanSage Mar 31 Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer are wonderful in this tragic tale of love and immigrants. Russian-American director Lewis Milestone’s romantic war drama Arch of Triumph (1948) is very touching and intriguing. Milestone’s film noir aesthetics use shadows and stark white lights for striking images of a melancholic Ingrid Bergman and a forlorn Charles Boyer. It’s mostly them going on dates drinking and avoiding the police, as they are illegal immigrants. Their shadowy affair is fascinating. Ingrid Bergman’s melancholic romantic heroine Joan Madou is so lovely, delicate, and dependent on her lover. Her singing is very pretty. It’s easy to fall for Bergman’s breathtaking beauty and effortless charm. Her chemistry with Boyer is palpable. Charles Boyer’s conflicted physician Dr. Ravic struggles with his past trauma, while helping heal others however he can. In all, Arch of Triumph is excellent and enamouring thanks to Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman’s fabulous acting performances. See more Gary D @RT53049889 12/15/2023 Great cast, interesting story. Definitely worth watching. See more 09/01/2021 Too long... a boring, slow narrative about people who can't think strategically. Could have been far better. See more 09/27/2015 Arch of Triumph is not a bad film but it does not come together well. I can recommend it to those that enjoy films from that era. As a romance I do not believe it works and do not find the co-stars to be a good pairing. The leading man is stiff and is no Bogart or Grant. Despite the disappointment, I don't want to take away too much from the film as it did keep my interest throughout. See more 08/19/2015 It's the story of a refugee--a relatively privileged refugee, it must be said--though it still gives a sense of the difficulties of being a refugee. And it's a love story, a mature love story, which is a nice change from the usual sort of Hollywood love story. But it's a love story which interrupts and takes over a story of the fight against nazism/fascism--thus seeing nazism/fascism as a problem insofar as it interferes with love (romance, domesticity).
