DanTheMan 2 @DanTheMan2150AD 21 hrs ago A chillingly sinister slice of anthology terror from Amicus, Asylum's individual tales of madness swing wildly in scares and tone, but thanks to a vivid imagination and a wonderfully morbid sense of humour, the film holds together. There is always something particularly unnerving about the idea of a house full of insane people, not because madness is inherently frightening, but because it becomes almost impossible to know where reality ends and delusion begins. A creepy, atmospheric and frequently macabre slice of early-1970s horror, Asylum is certainly one of Amicus's better efforts because sometimes the most frightening thing in the room is not the monster, but the possibility that the person sitting opposite you might be completely insane. Staying up late in my dark bedroom watching a tiny TV when one of these magical movies comes on. The main thing I get from them is just how much the writers cared for the pure great stories. Production value was never high, but the evilness was high in the 70s Home Counties. Asylum is a little more hit n miss than, Tales from the crypt. But it’s second on my Amicus Portmanteau list.
