A tender coming-of-age tale about the loss of innocence in the waning days of WWII: it is the Spring of 1945 on the German island of Amrum, where 12-year-old Nanning spends his days working the farm and his nights fishing. Despite the hardship, life on the windswept isle seems idyllic. When farmer Tessa (Diane Kruger) mentions to Nanning that the war will soon be over, the boy--too young to understand the political implications--is pleased to imagine that his Nazi officer father might soon be coming home. But word of Germany's imminent defeat sends his mother into decline, and as Nanning looks to his community for support, he learns that the true enemy is far closer than he imagined.

Wonderful coming of age story set right as Germany surrenders about a young boy whose mother is a supporter of Hitler up to the last while the neighbors express their relief that the war is finally ending. Similar to JoJo Rabbit with another fine performance by the child lead.

Thought provoking movie exploring the rarely seen German WWII fallout following the defeat of the Nazis regime from the perspective of the support base within the German population for Hitler’s war. This true account of a young child living within a pro-Nazis family is a moving account because it is the true reflection of the life of one such boy.

Amrum is a complex and compelling film. One of restraint and quietly observed moments. It's a coming of age film set in the most dramatic of times. It's 1945 Germany and we see a young family on the German island of Amrum seeing out the last days of the war. Father is away in Hamburg as part of the SS and mother is home with three children. At the centre is the oldest child in Nanning. He is a sensitive child and he tries to make sense of the ongoing conflict and how he is treated by the islanders. He goes hunting and is confronted by the vagaries of life and death. He also learns about the history of his family and some dark secrets therein. It makes for a very rich and rewarding film with many subtle notes. The acting is superb too with young Jasper Billerbeck a standout as Nanning. A film of great sunstance and vital importance.
