Critics Consensus

A public service announcement with a disarming sense of humor, André is an Idiot brings a light touch to a morbid topic and is all the more powerful for it.

"Andre is an Idiot" is cleverly made and surprisingly touching given how utterly irreverent and profane it is. Go to Full Review

Director Tony Benna wisely spares us the gory details of how André died in favor of showing us how André lived, both before and after cancer. And what a life it was, void of convention and rife with creativity, Go to Full Review

Jason 10h Very heart felt and realistic. Being a co-pilot on a journey through mortality with an extraordinary, funny human being. See more David D B 3d Beautiful, hilarious, difficult and poignant. Just a brilliant tribute to Andre. See more Jeffrey R 4d A heart wrenching story of strength, grace and humor in the face of the worst possible diagnosis. A snapshot into a person's soul and humanity as he faces life's ultimate end. Profoundly sad and remarkably humbling. See more Anita M 4d A funny documentary, but unGodly. See more Marc C. @StratCat 2h Hysterical, poignant, heartbreaking and inspiring. Probably the most unusual documentary I’ve seen, with an irreverence befitting the subject. The emphasis on humor and joy in horrible circumstances engages the audience immediately and carries it through the more challenging moments as the disease progresses. Andre lays himself bare for the camera, and the director doesn’t shy away from showing the pain involved for Andre but even more so for his friends and family. Some (many?) will resist seeing this movie because of its subject matter but they’ll miss out on a moving look at how one man faces death. Strongly recommended. See more Linda M @Linwood75 3d I highly recommend "Andre is an Idiot." It is a deeply touching story about a unique man, his family, and friends; very funny, and with an important message for all. I saw it last night, with an in-person talk by the director afterwards. It is so cleverly composed, intermixed with brief animations, adventures, interviews, and even a brief cameo appearance by Tommy Chong. I predict an Oscar win next year. See more Read all reviews
