Jeff M @jeffmarshallmovieblogger 02/10/2024 When you scroll through the title on your streaming service of choice and a title like BINGO HELL pops up, well, you don't ask any questions. You just grab the popcorn, shut off the phone and start the show. Unfortunately this movie is neither scary enough to be a good horror movie nor cheesy enough to be a good satire of horror movies. It's also not bad enough to be a guilty pleasure. Despite a game performance by Oscar nominee Barraza, who seems to be channeling the feisty spirit of Rita Moreno throughout, there isn't much to recommend here beyond the initial promising concept. The first three-quarters is actually borderline boring with very little going on - lots of exposition but not a lot of pay off. With the exception of Barraza, the other performances aren't particularly strong although Brake's villainous Mr. Big made me think of Julian Beck's Kane in POLTERGEIST II from time to time. Only the ending embraces the absurdity of what's going on although it's arguably way too over the top and jarring compared to what's come before it. In the end, there's nothing scarier here than what you would find in a normal bingo hall. But it's nice to see so many senior citizens finding roles. Not if bad ass abuelita Adriana Barraza has something to say about it. Cool horror comedy movie from Blumhouse productions. Bingo Hell is one horror comedy film that is about a stereotypical elderly who complains about everything and hate that her small town is changing with new faces and being modern. When her old bingo hall gets bought out by a shady guy and modernizes bingo with a cache for the winners. These get bloody when body counts rises and she is trying to figure it out. The humor is dumb. The script and direction is annoying and stupid. It lacks the thrills and scares. Gives more gross deaths than thrills. The acting is forgettable and annoying. The cast is tedious. The residents of a small, impoverished, American town are struggling to remember who they once were in a community who has forgotten its true identity. Seduced by a nefarious newcomer, this Faustian story will test the moral fibre of this tribe presenting them with a fight for the very soul of their town. This struck a note of sincerity based on the authenticity of the well developed characters and the exploration of the every day problems of the real people in America. This has all the ingredients to be a cult horror B-grade classic. A simple yet effectively executed message about people being tested and self-discovery in a light hearted comedy/horror context.
