See more Jacob B Feb 16 A more poignant film than preceding, it's understandable that audiences might not be receptive towards Mad About the Boy. Having the titular character widowed js likely going to rub some the wrong way though it's Bridget's dad also dying that upset me ("y u do dis" to Jim Broadbent?") plus the humour being more downplayed. Regardless, Renee Zellweger remains as charming and rootable as ever in the title role, the film handles heavy themes respectfully, in spite of yet another love triangle, the concerns about Bridget's age and being widowed make things different this time around and it's nice to see Hugh Grant again after he remained a complete no-show in the previous film. The character certainly seems to have become a bit more humble. The womanising is still there, but old habits die hard, IG. I don't think Bridget Jones 4 is as enjoyable as the odd-numbered films but it's still better than the sometimes-outlandish second film. Truly the "Star Trek Film Series" of romcoms. I found the book an interesting take on Bridget's life adventure and journey but the movie just didn't work. We get to see a ton of former characters, which is interesting, but little is really known about them and they seem trapped in their world from 20 years prior. And for that matter, so does Bridget. I expected a Bridget who was grieving but discovers, maybe with a little help, that she's not this woman who still can't dress herself like a grown up, still has hair that looks like she doesn't care and is still the same clueless wonder. Bridget never seemed to grow up. Some viewers found this charming but I found it depressing. In fact, the whole movie is depressing. Everything feels forced and the chemistry that's supposed to exist between Bridget and her very young lover seems extremely fake. The movie struck me as a story about aging and headed toward the end of life, not a restart in midlife as it attempts to sell. See more Robert N @chobiFarts Jan 19 Mad about the boy?
