Allan C @RT15713161 3d Passable early Don Siegel-directed film noir Count the Hours! (1953) **1/2 Silly film noir about a crusading small-town lawyer defending a migrant worker falsely accused of murder. An early film directed by the great Don Siegel (DIRTY HARRY, INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, CHARLEY VARRICK) and ace cinematographer John Alton (RAW DEAL, THE BIG COMBO), who elevate a pretty bad and implausible script. The cast is all serviceable, but it’s a very sleazyJack Elam as an alcoholic local psycho, who steals the movie and who somehow has the super hot girlfriend, Adele Mara as a Gloria Grahame-style femme fetal seductress. I looked up Mara, and she married writer Roy Huggins, who’d later go on to create the TV shows MAVERICK, THE FUGITIVE, and THE ROCKFORD FILES. Overall, COUNT THE HOURS! is not a particularly memorable noir, but it’s worth watching for fans of Jack Elam (whom I count myself among) and is worth watching at least once for noir fans. See more 08/02/2015 good noirish type drama See more 01/04/2013 Dry crime drama against the clock, Don Siegel certainly improved as a director after this film. See more 10/27/2011 confusing but fast paced and watchable. See more 10/27/2011 I watched it but all I'll give it is it's watchable. The female characters couldn't be more polar opposites, it was just too annoying for me. Add to this a relatively boring job by the defense attorney and an innocent man that doesn't protest nearly enough and it doesn't go real well. Two more mentions: 1.every time the "bad guy" shows up the music switches into this kind of horror film mode that is distracting as well as insulting 2.the crucial eleventh hour evidence is the fact that the police didn't acknowledge the TIME the witness heard the killer ranting about his deed? Really? No one asked him what TIME he heard this "early, before the bar opened" was good enough? It was two hours before the body was found, there would have been no need for this movie!
