I finally watched Dìdi, and it’s nothing short of a masterpiece. It beautifully captures the significance of a nickname that has been an integral part of my identity—a name my family has always called me. As some people in the past have struggled to understand this nickname's importance, occasionally even making light of it, this film profoundly underscores its deep cultural and generational meaning. It brought back many memories of my younger years. Although I have some differences with how the film portrays certain aspects, that final scene with Joan Chen reflects a bond similar to the one I share with my mom. While my sister’s generation may connect most with the nostalgic details of Myspace and AIM, having grown up in the 2000s, the film’s coming-of-age narrative still resonates deeply with many Asian Americans, especially those with Taiwanese heritage. Sean Wang has created a piece of art that made me feel truly seen.
