Alain E @AlainE Jul 6 A completely crazy road movie between Greece and Turkey. The protagonist is Djam, a young Greek girl who is fluent in French as she was raised in Paris. Lives now in Greece with her deceased mother’s boyfriend who goes by the moniker of Evildoer. She is assigned to go to Istanbul to get a spare part for a boat. There she meets another lost soul, a young French girl who had plans to volunteer in a health clinic at the Syrian border, but after she lost her money she starts traveling with Djam. They meet more unusual people, one of them shaves the other’s pubic hair (no visible nudity) and generally are having a nice trip. On Tubi. It includes nice rebetico and oriental music and dancing. See more 02/10/2021 Tony Gatlif is often described as specialising in movies about the Roma, but this is only a partial description of his work. His movies explore many themes in a way that can appear quite casual and individual, but represent some very archetypal processes, occuring both in individuals and society at large. His movies are often characterised by a suspension of judgement which allow the audience to come to their own conclusions. Nothing is spelt out in a Gatlif movie, you have to watch and reflect and try not to let anything pass you by, so they are not for everyone. But he is a master not just of cinematography but also of storytelling and revealing the extraordinary energies of the actors and performers with whom he engages.
