There's nothing here for me to love - excepting, maybe, the incomparable Michael Pena - but this isn't really a movie for 30-plus year-old adults. Kids get to have movies for themselves too.

Despite the switch from animation to live action, this still feels like something you would see on TV, with over-the-top performances from the adults, some decidedly dodgy visual effects and a Scooby-Doo-like plot.

Containing every hackneyed scene in jungle movies from time immemorial, this should appeal to 10 year old girls. Adults might like the closing song and dance.

The film is actually trying to find a way to make adults and kids laugh... doesn't always work.

For the most part, I enjoyed Dora and the Lost City of Gold, but by the time the credits rolled, I was left with the same empty feeling I had come to know so well.

The only major surprise is that James Bobin's Dora and the Lost City of Gold is actually hitting theaters instead of winding up on some sort of Viacom streaming service, given how cheap and strained it often feels...

A tame kidflick not appreciably better than the sort of thing regularly made nowadays for the Disney Channel or Nickelodeon.

If by some chance the kids corral you into this Jumanji rip-off, at least see it all the way through the spirited, semi-reparative closing credits number.

The adventure lacks any real excitement as the obstacles are easily overcome. Nonetheless, Dora is a recommendation for families with children.

Structurally, I mean, what else are you going to do? I was back and forth about it. This isn't a "good movie," but it's better than a Disney channel movie.

Sure, there may be a nugget or two of gold in "Lost City." But it mostly stays lost, in this convoluted drag of a script. "Dora" should have picked a path and stayed on it. Instead, it's a movie that is muy aburrido - boring.

Struggles to balance its toddler-focused origins with the demands of blockbuster filmmaking, mostly landing in an awkward middle ground.

[S]omething that so affably jokes about one formula suffers for relying on another one.
August 8, 2019
The story is serviceable enough, but it gets undercut by the kind of dialogue and performances that make it feel more appropriate for a kids' TV network than a feature film.

It's mostly harmless, and there are occasional moments of humor ... But for anyone old enough to be critical, Dora is decidedly dull and unimpressive.
August 8, 2019
It's bad. Like 'Master of Disguise' bad.
August 8, 2019
The movie demands too much of Dora and doesn't give her enough help to do it well.

Strictly for those whose heads don't reach above the seat, this over-the-top slapsticky adventure is well-meaning and certainly enthusiastic, but it plays even more like kids TV than its original inspiration even did.

Kids certainly won't learn anything here, but they're not likely to mistake it for entertainment, either.
