Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw Reviews

A pedal-to-the-metal action adventure - with very little under the hood.
September 8, 2019
Hobbs & Shaw is an action movie as a meme; the entire film is a self-effacing wink at the audience.
September 5, 2019
...an especially ineffective modern blockbuster that wears out its welcome by a good 45 minutes.

Who would've thought Hobbs & Shaw would make you appreciate the subtly of the Vin Diesel-led films? This is one of the weaker entries in the Fast and Furious franchise, and that's say something with Tokyo Drift.

There's chemistry amongst the cast that is undeniable and some of its outrageousness is entertaining, but it all begins to feel similar and falls apart far sooner than it should. The story is basically a dunce cap disguised as a pocket protector.

Mostly, the movie just putters along on two jokes: The Rock is very, very big, and Jason Statham compared to him (and not anybody else) is small.
August 15, 2019
While Johnson and Statham have bags of charisma to spare, all that does is keep this from being worse than it is.

Worth it? No. Not only because it is a standard action movie, but also because the only thing left of the spirit of the franchise are the characters of Hobbes and Shaw, but if they had changed their names, no one would care. [Full Review in Spanish]

There's almost no tension as our two "heroes" seem more interested in delivering comedic one-liners than helping friends in perilous situations.
August 10, 2019
...a seemingly endless insult to entertainment ...
August 10, 2019
Who was the story consultant, Michael Bay?
August 9, 2019
At the halfway point, it just stops trying to be a better movie, in favor of its action and its sets. I don't hate it, but it's not as good as the Fast & Furious movies.
August 9, 2019
Maybe we need Vin Disel and the family, I don't know...when they say two-and-a-half hours, it's like The Rock holding you down. The same jokes stretched out.
August 9, 2019
You can check your brain at the door, of course, although the film lacks the sort of spontaneity and imagination that could make it stand out.
August 8, 2019
A big, dumb Fast & Furious movie where you can clearly see what happens in (most of) the action scenes is still a big, dumb Fast & Furious movie.
August 8, 2019
A stew of 'hilarious' toxic masculinity and nonstop violence as the solution to all problems. Sexist, stupid nonsense, tediously familiar and wholly predictable. Even the cartoonish action falls flat.
August 8, 2019
Hobbs & Shaw may be entertaining, but it is far from being a good movie. [Full Review in Spanish]

What made "Mission Impossible: Fallout" so remarkable was the honesty in its extravagance--that really was Tom Cruise up in the helicopter! This avoids honesty the way its stars avoid off days at the gym.
August 7, 2019
So over the top, it makes The Fate of the Furious look like gritty realism. Think about that for a moment.
August 6, 2019
Leitch manages to inject some real excitement late in the proceedings, but it's too little too late for this overstuffed feature. Hobbs and Shaw may have finally received their own film, but it is not the one they deserved.
