In this modern creature feature, a scary internet meme called "Grimcutty" stirs up panic amongst all the parents in town, convinced it's making their kids harm themselves and others. When a real-life version of Grimcutty starts attacking teen Asha Chaudry (Sara Wolfkind), her parents believe that she's cutting herself as part of a challenge. With her phone taken away and no one who believes her, Asha has to figure out how to get through to her parents and stop the Grimcutty once and for all.

This is a messy film, complete with substantial logic gaps, more than one scenery-chewing performance, and a run time that isn’t earned by its relatively thin, repetitive script.

Yes, parents and kids need to be mindful of the problems that can arise with technology and especially with the mental and emotional well-being of teens, but this goofy-looking monster and uneven story aren't the best vehicles to deliver that message.

Grimcutty starts with an interesting premise—materializing internet urban legends—but ruins it with poor visual execution. Up close, the monster looks like a cheap plastic doll with deficient CGI. The pacing is frustrating, completely lacking tension, jump scares, or genuine dread. Furthermore, the father's irrational, detestable writing makes you hate him more than the villain. Logically, the script fails hard. Instead of natural progression, the parents discover the truth through completely random situations and convenient coincidences to rush the ending. Additionally, the blog creator character is completely wasted, adding zero useful information. Finally, the protagonist's ASMR-style whispered videos are utterly detestable, generating visceral disgust and forcing you to watch the ending in silence. It is a massive wasted opportunity that fails on almost every level.

Synopsis
