Breaking hearts and mending them in one fell swoop, Hamnet speculates on the inspiration behind Shakespeare's masterpiece with palpable emotional force thanks to Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal's astonishing performances.

At the risk of seeming woo-woo, Hamnet does hold you in a metaphorical embrace, one which gives you permission to feel connected to emotions the rest of the world tells you to push down. Go to Full Review

Mescal, rightly, takes a back seat while Buckley lets rip with the most astounding ferocity. It is ruthlessly manipulative and maybe you will be able to resist. But I’d take a hanky all the same. Go to Full Review

The film’s storyline is more straightforward than the book’s and its main points are spelt out more emphatically but if the plot loses some of its delicacy on screen, the impact of its ending makes up for it. Go to Full Review

Earnest as it is, to be frank, the film turns out to be something of a downer. Dare one suggest the film is a tad overrated? Go to Full Review

Had so many things I love in a film, and Zhao’s direction is also beautiful: it’s so fresh and atmospheric and impressionistic. I just wish I liked it more. … [Buckley] goes off-chops in the final sequence. It’s kind of silly … but I didn’t want to laugh… Go to Full Review

[Jacobi Jupe] is the film's greatest revelation and certainly a match for Buckley. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Carlos 1h Best movie of the year by far. See more isaac 1h It was definitely a slow pace but the acting, score, and cinematography were top notch. Definitely a strong contender for best picture. All of the actors were extremely impressive and the kid who plays Hamnet needs and Oscar yesterday. That little boy is probably the best actor I’ve ever seen on screen. Jessie Buckley definitely earned her Oscar nomination as well. I hope she wins. Overall, solid watch. Would recommend. Definitely not for everyone though. See more Erik 2h What a powerful move around the themes of love and death. See more DS 3h Unbelievably beautiful See more Greg 15h Woman lead was great. Showed no dvelopment of ashakespeare’s career. Showed little of impact of them being apart. Made movie pretty pointless until last scene. See more Jane S 15h A clever story with extraordinary acting especially the young children and Hamnet See more Read all reviews
