Critics Consensus

Hocus Pocus 2 is basically a boiling cauldron of nostalgia, but that's just enough for this belated sequel to cast a reasonably effective spell.

As soon as the trio turn up, Hocus Pocus 2 immediately becomes compelling and enjoyable. Go to Full Review

Hocus Pocus 2 really is cute (enough). If you’re in the right mood, it’s maybe even good. Go to Full Review

The film wears its ridiculousness so proudly, it’s impossible to disdain. It is both a diverting watch and a sly commentary on its predecessor’s strengths. Go to Full Review

Hocus Pocus 2 made me laugh, often uncontrollably, and it made me misty-eyed by the end. That’s all I ask from films like it, and I can’t wait to see it again with my friends. Preferably in costume, with candy, and then again every year afterward. Go to Full Review

There is a lot to enjoy about the sequel, even for stubborn fanatics of the Kenny Ortega feature film. Go to Full Review

While there are plenty of fan service nods to its 1993 predecessor, “Hocus Pocus 2” stands capably on its own, offering a spooky diversion for a whole new generation of viewers. Go to Full Review

Nikki A @Nikki9 7 hrs ago I am so tired of critics given such crap movies such high regard. How in the world did this pot of old hot dog water get a much better rating than the OG Hocus Pocus? Give me a break! At this point the audience ratings are much more reliable and I dont even give the critics a second look. They wouldnt know a good movie if it hit them in the face See more Robert P @Superbad Sep 9, 2026 Hocus Pocus 2 = 2.5 Star Movie... See more Kelly G @RT48333728 Sep 9, 2026 It's like the writers didnt even watch the first movie. The plot made absolutely no sense. The witches were destroyed by the sun in the original, but now they're brought back by some random candle sold at a souvenir shop? It would have made more sense to bring them back by having Max's kid read a spell from Winnie's book. The nostalgia factor, the main reason why this movie was worth watching to begin with, is non existent. See more Taj M @RT67826069 Aug 30, 2026 An insult to the original movie. The kids were so forgettable that I won't waste more time talking about them. But the Sanderson sisters were completely sanitized. They used to worship the devil (remember Gary Marshall?), but that was completely left out (and quasi-replaced with another witch?). Instead of being evil, they're now just misunderstood outcasts who actually love each other. Give me a break. Additionally, the sisters' motivation in the original was clear -- suck the lives of children to stay young forever. In this one, they want to become extra powerful to...what? The whole thing is so half-baked. The original will live in people's hearts forever. This slop has already been forgotten. See more Blake G. @mblakeg Jun 18, 2026 Look, i’m a huge fan of the first hocus-pocus and grew up watching it. I knew that the second one wouldn’t have the same nostalgia, But having the original witches (I thought) would be enough to make it just as good. I feel like some creative choices were made in the film that didn’t make sense with the first film. The fact that it wasn’t really filmed in Salem is not too apparent, but the some key locations like the cottage (that is now in the middle of town…as if they built old houses around it since 1993) and the cemetery (a sound stage in the first film) just being a boring cemetery in an open field, really felt different. Equally, in the first film, they sing one more modern song (I put a spell on you) which is playing as they enter. In theory, they’ve heard the song and can sing it….and for a reason. In the sequel, they sing two modern songs that they would’ve never heard before. And neither serves a purpose. Great performances but kinda missed the mark overall! See more Read all reviews
