Critics Consensus

Annette Bening and Bill Nighy are just about worth the price of admission, but Hope Gap lacks enough depth to really leave an impact.

The trouble with opening up this story for long walks on the beach? It seems to flatten out with the tide. Go to Full Review

None of it lacks credibility. As a portrait of the breakup of a marriage, and the three-cornered pain of the situation, it's completely convincing. Go to Full Review

It all rounds up to a film with some decent analytical prowess, but remains pedestrian in execution. Go to Full Review

Lori S 03/20/2020 Very good story about love and loss and moving on with life. See more patricia e 03/10/2020 Well acted by all. Story is sad, but redemptive in the end which demonstrates the resilience we all possess. See more M C @Mchanda 12h It was slow moving and the vicious character of Grace was deeply disturbing. The protagonists son, Jamie, and the abused husband, Edward, allowed her to behave like a psychiatric patient, with physical and verbal abuse thrown at them, seeming to be acceptable, with no real consequences or comment....not for me See more JaiSai @Jaisai 1d Hope Gap is a quietly devastating exploration of marriage, heartbreak, and the consequences of unspoken truths. The film’s performances are outstanding, raw yet restrained, and I found myself fighting back tears more than once. Grace is not written to be easily likeable, she is sharp, wounded, and openly angry, which may unsettle some viewers. Yet her reaction feels painfully human. Her anger is not cruelty but the honest sound of shock and a life being dismantled. The story highlights how communication and effort are essential in relationships, and it is heartbreaking to watch a marriage unravel when both partners are capable of making it work. Hope Gap does not soften the edges of grief or betrayal, which makes it feel authentic and emotionally powerful. The friendship offer at the end by Edward felt like a weak consolation prize, and I loved that Grace turned it down! You go, gal! ❤️ A subtle, beautifully made film that lingers long after the credits roll. ❤️ See more Melanie W Aug 6 A movie about a narcissist mother and the men, her husband and son who try to survive her. See more mark Mar 5 The acting was excellent. The story line and script left much to be desired. I went away with the feeling that the wife lacked any connection with reality and was just mentally unstable. See more Read all reviews
