What to Know

Critics Consensus

Annette Bening and Bill Nighy are just about worth the price of admission, but Hope Gap lacks enough depth to really leave an impact.

The trouble with opening up this story for long walks on the beach? It seems to flatten out with the tide. Go to Full Review

None of it lacks credibility. As a portrait of the breakup of a marriage, and the three-cornered pain of the situation, it's completely convincing. Go to Full Review

It all rounds up to a film with some decent analytical prowess, but remains pedestrian in execution. Go to Full Review

Lori S 03/20/2020 Very good story about love and loss and moving on with life. See more patricia e 03/10/2020 Well acted by all. Story is sad, but redemptive in the end which demonstrates the resilience we all possess. Have your shrink's number handy tho. It's not an easy watch. Benning plays a character whose vulnerable narcissitic (I know. over-used but appropriate) tendencies cause torment in the lives of those around her. These characteristics don't age well. and like my mother, frazzle even the most saintly of nerves. This movie was like salt on the wounds left by my own parents. Dad had enough, said good bye and next thing you know. mom is suicidal. Funny, SHE is the one who ASKED for the divorce. This movie was like looking in a mirror. I have behaved like my mother many times, but no more after watching this. I honestly think whoever is behind this movie is doing God's work whether he realizes it or not. Thank you. The natural scenery, paired with a classical score that perfectly captures the protagonists' old-fashioned souls, makes it feel timeless. The dialogue is simple yet profound. I was deeply moved by the mother finally finding a peaceful end; it felt like a release that allowed her child to start a new chapter. A truly dramatic and stunning piece of cinema See more Mike K. @SlaughterLane Feb 1 This is a story that sticks with you. It’s very good for mature audiences who have been through a good portion of life. See more Read all reviews
