Critics Consensus

Annette Bening and Bill Nighy are just about worth the price of admission, but Hope Gap lacks enough depth to really leave an impact.

The trouble with opening up this story for long walks on the beach? It seems to flatten out with the tide. Go to Full Review

None of it lacks credibility. As a portrait of the breakup of a marriage, and the three-cornered pain of the situation, it's completely convincing. Go to Full Review

It all rounds up to a film with some decent analytical prowess, but remains pedestrian in execution. Go to Full Review

Lori S 03/20/2020 Very good story about love and loss and moving on with life. See more patricia e 03/10/2020 Well acted by all. Story is sad, but redemptive in the end which demonstrates the resilience we all possess. See more Tweety K @Birdissa 2d People might think this is about the failure of a marriage. Yes, but it is also about narcissism. Narcissism has been portrayed millions of different ways. This movie does a very good job of showing how one person's narcissism manifests so clearly. I think it is brilliant. Stunning in how blatantly this portrayal is. The characters are perfect counterpoints to each other. It is like a ballet. There is not one wasted word in this script. Annette Benning is up to the task. She shows how blatantly hungry a narcissistic person with high narcissistic traits is. How she wants to devour all the peace in the room. Her husband has been a slave to her personality for decades and she has finally tapped him out. He says he met a woman he started to know. When she touched his arm so gently he knew he loved and needed her. Annette Benning's character is a hungry wrecking ball who makes her husband feel less than human. but demands he take it and talk to her when she wants. This is pure genius. J See more kandy55 f @kandy55 Feb 10 iIF YOU WANT TO BE BORED AND NEED TO SLEEP, THIS MOVIE WAS JUST AS BORING AS THE MARIAGE, SPOILER - HE LEAVES HER FOR ANOTHER WOMAN SHE DOESNT SIGN THE DIVORCE PAPERS THE END LOL See more Paul Terry Services L @Colleenathedream Feb 7 For anyone who grew up with a "difficult" mother, this film is for you. Have your shrink's number handy tho. It's not an easy watch. Benning plays a character whose vulnerable narcissitic (I know. over-used but appropriate) tendencies cause torment in the lives of those around her. These characteristics don't age well. and like my mother, frazzle even the most saintly of nerves. This movie was like salt on the wounds left by my own parents. Dad had enough, said good bye and next thing you know. mom is suicidal. Funny, SHE is the one who ASKED for the divorce. This movie was like looking in a mirror. I have behaved like my mother many times, but no more after watching this. I honestly think whoever is behind this movie is doing God's work whether he realizes it or not. Thank you.
