Dylan C @Ojeda 2 days ago I always enjoy watching great actors work, and DeNiro and Harris are definitely in that category. What also made this film intriguing was how young they were. The film itself was gritty, raw, basic, funny, heartfelt. DeNiro played his character perfectly, with many nuances that typify his brilliance and dedication to his character. Harris's part was more difficult, as he had to portray an alcoholic bitterly trying to resolve his experiences in Vietnam. The woman who played his sister did a great job, and her scenes with DeNiro were elegant and meaningful. Where I had a problem was with the screenplay. While a lot of it was excellent, the ending in particular left me cold. Harris apologizes to his sister but never gives his blessing to DeNiro to be a part of his sister's life. That is intimated by the last scene but I wish it had been written better. Still, DeNiro was magic as he always is, and it was a real treat to see him at such a young age! Ed Harris's typically realistic and superb performance; Robert Dinero's very (always very) solid character portrayal and Kathy Baker's also perfectly realistic rendition of a shy, smalltown wallflower who has more heartfelt sensitivity than the typically "popular" types makes this moving truly heart touching. All this comes from excellent direction and combines for a flick that really works!
