Critics Consensus

John and the Hole's enticingly unique premise and disquieting atmosphere are often at odds with a meandering story that prevents this thriller from fulfilling its creepy potential.

It's both tantalising and deliberately unsatisfying. You're never given the comfort of knowing what comes next. Go to Full Review

While the result may not be quite as deep as the cavern at the centre of the story, it has an enticing sliver of ice at its heart. Go to Full Review

A sterile, supercilious, derivative exercise in sub-Euro-arthouse ordeal. But there is no ordeal because nothing is at stake. Go to Full Review

Masterfully slick, unsettling filmmaking builds this film into something more profound than it seems at first glance. It's one of these films that is going to be endlessly divisive just because it's so ambiguous and creepy. Go to Full Review

While the script allows the tension to dissipate some as the film goes on, Özgür’s cinematography only ups it. It never stops feeling slightly off, and a bit disturbing. Go to Full Review

Mary 08/06/2021 Terrible movie, everyone in the theater was making comments…..including us. People behind said that was 2 hours of wasted time she can never get back. Others ‘F’d up waste of money’ See more Jan M @Jan1934 3d It is hands down the worst movie I have ever seen. The storyline at first seems to have a plot. Then the writer tries to give the impression of a child that just innocently wants to experience adulthood, in making his own choices but at the same time not have to deal with any of the responsibilities or consequences of his actions. My first thought was, this was written by a teenager that never got what they wanted, maybe been told no to this, or no to that. It certainly feels like that. Especially, with the ending, leaving the viewer shocked at the unrealistic thinking, that any normal parent will let bygones be bygones and the family will live out their days as if nothing has happened. If these kids are to be viewed as role model's, we are all doomed. Power, control, teenage confusion, puberty, parental ignorance and so much more. Ending was annoying but good. See more Elisabeth E @RT17368215 Nov 13 UNBELIEVABLY STUPID! WHAT A WASTE OF TIME AND RESOURCES. WHY WAS THIS MOVIE EVEN MADE AND WHY HALL AGREE TO PLAY THIS PART> See more Mr. M @RT40704596 Nov 12 I have no words to explain how astronomically stupid this movie is, it makes no sense, they also add a random unexplained dumb subplot in the movie that goes absolutely nowhere.
