Not W @RT12206551 Sep 7, 2025 I think the movie is making fun of academia. I disagree with it being about middle-age since it addresses the main character and his friends, but also his mother and student. I feel they are all overly educated, self-centered, share a victim mentality, and do nothing productive or helpful to society. I think the old high school buddy represents the common man whom the main character looks down upon and ignores. I liked the movie, I found it funny, but never laughed. The universality of the formula ("a pathetic being discovers he has only months to live") serves as an excuse for his absurd ping-pong, showcasing his verbal sparring, which isn't about speed but about exposing the world (both the cinematic one and the other) through his surgical and absurd deadpan. Where Byington strikes, like good termite comedy, he reveals the flaws of an increasingly pathetic American cinema, one that is becoming more fossilized in the eyes of those who watch, buy, and program it.
