They just decided to pluck a few characters out of the book to make there own story. You can't even see the wonder bliss the author portrayed in the book. Although there is a dominant Chinese influence in Taipei, there’s a wide variety of cultural diversity in the city ranging from Taiwanese aborigines to Japanese and even simply Taiwanese that the film failed to capture.
