The movies can be a wonderfully amoral medium, and I found myself liking Marty Mauser -- and not just liking him, but actually rooting for him to succeed. It takes more than a good actor to pull that off. It takes one of the greats.

One must really suspend all disbelief to get through this movie. I say "get through" rather than "enjoy," because that's what one does with a movie like this. Marty Mauser goes to any lengths to reach his goal, and he doesn't care who gets trampled on to get there. He's a conniver, a user, a manipulator, a fast-talker, a con man, a thief and a liar. Not really much to like there, and not surprisingly, the viewer doesn't really bond with or identify with this character. About that suspension of belief: Marty gets into the most astounding and sometimes predictable jams and leaves a trail of destruction and death in his wake, but it doesn't ever really catch up to him. Her just keeps moving toward his goal. If you CAN suspend belief, much of the movie is rather funny, but that's not an awful lot to hang a story on.
