Ron R @RT40558549 05/08/2025 Midsummer Madness is a charming and quirky ensemble film that captures the spirit of Latvia during its most magical holiday: the summer solstice. Directed by Alexander Hahn, the movie weaves together six interlinked stories, each unfolding under the glowing skies of the shortest night of the year. The film’s structure, reminiscent of Love Actually or Paris, je t’aime, balances humor, melancholy, and absurdity in equal measure. The characters — ranging from a lost French woman searching for a dead fiancé’s grave, to a confused American delivering ashes to the wrong person, to drunken Latvians arguing about national identity — are delightfully eccentric and lovingly portrayed. Each story feels grounded in reality but tinged with the surreal, much like the midsummer celebrations themselves, where fire, love, and folklore intermingle freely. What stands out most is the film’s affectionate tone. Even as it pokes gentle fun at cultural misunderstandings and the chaotic nature of travel and love, it never slips into cynicism. Instead, Midsummer Madness offers an ode to the small, unexpected moments that connect us across borders and beliefs. The cinematography is lush and atmospheric, capturing Latvia’s ethereal landscapes and midnight sun in a way that makes you long to join the festivities. And the performances — particularly by Maria de Medeiros, Dominique Pinon, and Orlando Wells — add nuance and heart to their offbeat roles. Overall, Midsummer Madness is a feel-good mosaic of humanity at its most lost and found — a celebration of life, laughter, and the beautiful strangeness of summer nights. Set in Latvia, the story follows a colorful mix of characters from different parts of the world, each visiting the small Baltic country for various reasons. The cinematography is stunning. Hahn uses the picturesque landscape and vibrant festivities to create an atmosphere that is both inviting and mystical. Unfortunately the "big twist" at the end isn't that big and not that much of a twist either. And wtf does a kangaroo hopping around in Latvia? See more 04/13/2008 sometimes stupid, often hilarious, and terribly uneven. being a latvian, i think i can appreciate it a little more than most, but there are still some good laughs to be had here by everyone.
