What to Know

Critics Consensus

Anne Hathaway acquits herself well as a believable pop star in Mother Mary, a modish psychodrama that can be frustratingly obtuse but has style to spare.

The point of art is truth and connection, and Mother Mary has neither. It might work better as a stage play. But hang on, the silly bits. It’s a chamber piece; a filmic exercise in distancing and control that left me cold. Go to Full Review

From the title onwards, the pervasive religious imagery hints that pop music is a modern equivalent to the traditional realm of the sacred and demonic. But this remains an abstract idea, and a stale one at that... Go to Full Review

Lowery the visionary behind The Green Knight and A Ghost Story—has never been a director who colors inside the lines, and Mother Mary represents his most audacious swing yet. Go to Full Review

The lead performances here are curiously stilted. Robotic, almost. Hathaway does a solid job anchoring the Mary-in-concert sequences, but it’s not enough to make up for the dire talk dominating so much of the picture. Go to Full Review

A gorgeous, bewildering mess that almost earns its ambitions on the strength of two powerhouse performances and a killer soundtrack. Go to Full Review

Christine 5d Incredible film, well made with great art portraying! See more Pedro May 10 Mother Mary is a 5/5 masterpiece that centers on the volatile and deeply layered bond between two creative powerhouses. The film trades typical biographical tropes for an intimate exploration of their shared history, capturing the raw friction and magnetism that pull them together. It stands apart through its surreal direction, focusing entirely on the complex emotional landscape of their connection rather than the outside world. See more Shannan Reeve May 8 Incredible performances, deeply layered subtext, beautiful imagery. Had me hooked for the entire film. We need more movies like this. See more DOps May 7 This was an odd movie -- some interpersonal soap opera, some existential quandary, and some spiritual interjections. Kind of hard to figure out. I felt like I was in an art exhibition and, although felt ok to keep looking, never quite understood what the artist was trying to convey. This was stylish and well-acted. It was never clear whether Maia and Mary were lovers or should have been. The ending was also kind of ambiguous -- like you turned a corner at that art show expecting some resolution and suddenly realized that you had gone through an exit with no way back in. See more Cory H May 6 The visuals were amazing but the story was too out there. See more Ernesto May 6 I loved this film. Its not for everyone. What it is, its an art film. The dialogue and the nuances are what make it cohesive. The concert footage is worth sitting in your seat. Anne Hathaway is a relevant figure here. This film is amazing. If you can sit through an art film. So fat, the best art film Ive seen in years. See more Read all reviews
