I went to the EXACT same school that the one in the movie is inspired by! I want Muslim characters who exist because their stories matter and Mustache is a story that matters. Growing up South Asian in North America, you become aware pretty early that certain things about your appearance can make you feel different. Hair, skin, facial features — things that are completely normal can somehow become insecurities when all you want to do is fit in. That’s what I loved about this movie. Beneath the Pakistani and Muslim experience is something incredibly universal: learning to be comfortable with how you look and, eventually, appreciating the things that make you different. It brought back memories of growing up, comparing yourself to everyone around you and caring way too much about how other people saw you. As you get older, you realize how much energy we spend trying to change or hide things that were never wrong with us in the first place.
