[Newborn] becomes caught in between two modes of storytelling: the weighty drama and the destabilizing thriller. One wishes then that Parker either fully embraced his film’s genre or didn’t approach it at all Go to Full Review

Parker the director, however, is gifted with crews and capable actors and that shows, too. The members of his ensemble — especially Oyelowo — find ways to keep us guessing, and caring, to the end. Go to Full Review

Considering both the form and intimate nature of the film, performances are more crucial here than in most thrillers. As mentioned, Oyelowo and Stoxx deliver the goods, never more so than in their tense yet tender scenes together. Go to Full Review

It does a strong job highlighting PTSD and the lasting effects of trauma, while also tackling systemic racism in the justice system and how Black men are disproportionately treated. The film starts grounded but shifts into a psychological thriller, giving off vibes similar to The Shining and Get Out. While the message is powerful, the writing lacks clarity at times and sets up moments that don’t fully pay off. It had the potential to be great, but falls just short. Still, it’s a compelling and worthwhile watch that I can recommend. See more Read all reviews
