Pamela H @RT49702963 6 days ago Once Upon a Time is a magical story following a boy with Curly, a caterpillar that dances to an old-timey song. Young Ted Donaldson is amazing in his first film, delivering natural, rapid-fire lines with phenomenal chemistry alongside Cary Grant. Grant is slick as Mr. Flynn, willing to sell his soul to turn the pet into money. It's surprising Grant took such an unlikable role, though he eventually does the right thing. It is also fun seeing a Walt Disney stand-in comment on his era's prominence. Jimmy Gleason does a great job as the story's moral compass, bringing Flynn back to reality whenever he strays. We only see Curly's transformation in lovely, unexpected animation at the end. The ending is positive but bittersweet as Pinky worries about the butterfly's survival in the big wild world. It is a realistic fairy tale showing that sometimes we must let go of those we love. It's a fine showing and I enjoyed it. A showman with three bad plays under his belt needs a small fortune to save his theater. Naturally, he finds the answer in a boy with a box, a harmonica, and a dancing caterpillar. No, really.
