Academy Award® nominee Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown, Top Gun: Maverick) and BAFTA nominee Callum Turner (Masters of the Air, Fantastic Beasts franchise) star as Allie and Owen, two love-starved strangers who crash into each other in an ever-so-slightly fictionalized New York City on the one night of the year when single people are allowed to have sex. Recently dumped Owen and hopeful romantic Allie might be the only two singles in the city looking for more than just a quick encounter. They both feel a spark when they meet, but a series of missteps and side quests complicate their night, keeping them apart. As they each race toward and away from each other across the city, they just might discover that the one thing they want most is closer than they think.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Hampered by a high-concept premise that's full of red flags, One Night Only has charming moments thanks to its appealing stars but keeps killing the mood with world-building that prompts more questions than the script is willing to answer.

For something that’s billed as a sex comedy, it seems to actively judge sex and those who have it. Go to Full Review

One Night Only does capture something true about the anxieties and pressures of modern singlehood. The prospects can seem both abundant and astoundingly unappealing. Not trying feels like missing an opportunity, but trying might be worse. Go to Full Review

Barbaro is outstanding, giving a bold, bright, three-dimensional performance of physical and verbal dexterity that’s sublime. The talented actor confirms that her A Complete Unknown Academy Award nomination was hardly a fluke. Go to Full Review

It’s a movie that bites off way more than it can chew, but it's saved by its infectious energy and a genuinely likable pair of leads. Go to Full Review

Granted, that One Night Only promises a plain sex-comedy without the baggage of emotional labour, but to see it struggle to locate its own silly spot feels tiresome... Go to Full Review

One Night Only‘s retrogressive ending is so misguided that it’s tempting to quote a better romantic comedy involving a Hollywood sex worker: "Big mistake. Huge." Go to Full Review

Jesus 1d Not what I expected. I felt like I went to go see the purged, instead of crime it was sex… See more Dre 3d Loved it, perfect mix between cute and funny. See more Lee Most 4d Funny, satirical movie based on a stupid premise. I like movies that bring up awkward subjects that will give us things to pin our future conversations on, and "One Night Only" is definitely that! It's stupid premise is that due to reactionary politics, a pro-marriage mandate was passed that made it illegal and virtually impossible for unmarried Americans to have sex except for a 12-hour period only one night per year. To enforce that, everyone has a mandatory wrist tattoo that glows red or green to make it obvious when it's allowed, and there is a mercifully very short technobabble explanation of how that works. It does give the movie a good platform to comment on divisional politics, protests, the advertising industry, graffiti, the music industry, and all sorts of ways our society accepts as normal many things other societies would definitely not. About the only thing they don't lampoon is pizza, and that becomes a running joke throughout the movie. The story is a romantic comedy with slapstick humor, and lots of sex happening all around the main characters, who keep running into each other and not hooking up. Keeping to the trope, it's obvious to the audience and many other characters that they will somehow end up together, but how? As with many movies dealing with these subjects, it will surprise no one in these times that corporations would downplay and not advertise or promote a movie that makes fun of current politics and advertising itself, so watch this movie while you still can before it gets buried by meaningless action and superhero movies that will bring in millions without bringing anything to the public discourse.
