This particular revenge tale isn't an example of incompetent filmmaking, just sadly misfocused storytelling. Life in 1887 wasn't easy, but at some point, there has to be something more to say.

In a sea of grimy indie Westerns, especially ones that started with the same genre canvas, "Outlaws & Angels" is a thoroughly ugly example of when "Tarantino-esque" is the most generous compliment.

"Outlaws and Angels" isn't perfect - Murray mumbles into his beard way too much - but Eastwood sure is at ease with a cowboy hat and revolver. Clearly, she's studied with the best.

The main problem with Outlaws And Angels ... is that it lacks either a sense of authenticity or a streak of playfulness to give shape to its relentlessly ugly worldview.

[Director] JT Mollner must have watched a lot of Sam Peckinpah and Quentin Tarantino...He shows off a more than passing knowledge of their love of violence and viscera. But he missed out on any of their humor, poetry and artistry in this... tedious slog.

Grindhouse-worthy blood gushes forth, but the big thing this film doesn't have in common with some of the great pulp classics is that it's ultimately boring.
