Anthony Mackie’s performance is good as usual, but it feels like the movie was so close to making an actual point, only to have the plot completely die out at the last second. Somehow the automaton has more of a character arc than the human main character. The movie feels like it’s gonna critique the military industrial complex for a second, but then immediately goes, "nah the US is in the right actually," at the last minute. This is likely due to the fact that, since they used actual military acronyms and uniforms in places, the us military has to sign off on the script, meaning any actual critiques aren’t making it past the feds. Very unfortunate wasted potential, but I’d like to see both main actors work together on a different project, because they clearly have good chemistry, and play well off each other. The story follows a drone pilot sent into a dangerous military zone where he must work alongside a mysterious android soldier. It’s a solid premise that could have created a tense and gripping film, but the plot sometimes feels uneven and difficult to fully connect with. Anthony Mackie does a respectable job carrying much of the movie. While the role may not be perfect for him, he still brings enough energy and presence to keep the character engaging throughout the story. His performance helps keep the film moving during moments when the script begins to lose focus. The biggest issue comes from the direction and screenplay, which occasionally make the film feel rough and inconsistent. Still, it’s not a bad watch overall and is worth giving a chance. Everything feels slightly engineered, as if designed to move efficiently from one set piece to the next without real risk.
