03/16/2022 Marion Davies' best performance in a talkie See more 03/11/2019 TMC commentary by Ben Mankiewicz adds the unanimous positive critical reaction at the time and the enormous public response at the time, with one of the songs from the movie being catapulted to the #1 spot in musical fame. Davies did not consider this among her best performances (and I agree), but the critics disagreed and this film has always been mentioned as one of Davies' best. It is always difficult for American actors to put on foreign accents and this was one of the first attempts. Davies does fine at first, but slips as time goes on; however, this is much better than actors twenty and thirty years later, like Dick Van Dyke, who just can't get it at all. Davies is convincing in her role, despite the obvious plot inconsistencies. McDonald and Stevens also add to this well received film. Marion Davies truly was a shinning star that brought much to the screen & this film was a great showcase for talent indeed. Romantic & sentimental at its core you just have to go with it. Supposively a large hit in its day & still has appeal.
