Movie Info

Based on the novel by Roberto Saviano (Gomorrah), PIRANHAS follows fifteen year-old Nicola (newcomer Francesco Di Napoli) who lives with his mother and younger brother in the SanitaĚ neighborhood of Naples, a place that has been controlled by the Camorra mafia for centuries. Dreaming of a life lush with designer clothing and elite nightclub bottle service, Nicola and his naive group of friends begin selling drugs, an entryway into the violent, power-hungry world of crime that begins to threaten their innocence, relationships, and safety of their families.

  • Stylistic utility isn't enough to mask the essential emptiness at the heart of the story. When you strip away the novelty of it all, we're left with little more than a kids' meal version of Scarface.

  • It's visually interesting, but stylistic utility isn't enough to mask the essential emptiness at the heart of the story...

  • This drama isn't as masterful as "Gomorrah" but the handheld camerawork and spare use of score suck us into the crimes, all the more chilling due to the age of their perpetrators.

  • "Piranhas" is no documentary, but it plays out with a deadpan style that is deeply unsettling.

  • At some point, Piranhas stops trying to be even mildly unique and starts sluggishly going through the motions.

    Aug 2, 2019 | Rating: 2/4 | Full Review…
  • Despite Di Napoli's high cheekbones and natural appeal, Nicola isn't much of a character, toggling between baby-faced innocence and callow ruthlessness, but not much else.
