In a near dystopian future, Japan's government launches PLAN 75, a program encouraging the elderly to terminate their own lives to relieve its rapidly aging population's social and economic burdens. In Chie Hayakawa's remarkable and sensitive feature film debut, the lives of three ordinary citizens intersect in this new reality as they confront the crushing callousness of a world ready to dispose of those no longer deemed valuable. Legendary Japanese actress Chieko Baishō stars as a 78-year-old Michi who considers signing up for the program after losing her meager but fulfilling hotel job and the means to live independently. A young Plan 75 salesman Himoru (Hayato Isomura) initially believes in the program's benefits and serves as the human face of the program. And Maria (Stephanie Arianne), a Filipino care worker living overseas, reluctantly accepts a position with PLAN 75 to send money home to her ailing daughter. On the surface, the plan and its hawkers exude a kindness that serves as the film's chilling vision of bureaucratic indifference and our increasing loss of interconnectedness. However, Hayakawa’s view is far from grim, as these characters soon learn to fully reckon with their own lives and what it truly means to live.

This is a muted, resigned story about the way that countries and corporations follow their own self-interests rather than helping those most in need. Plan 75 may seem like it’s about ageing, but more accurately it is about the importance of community.

I had been planning to watch this for a long time, but I could not find it. The movie landed on Tubi, so I was able to watch it. Interesting subject matter, but I did consider it to be too slow for my taste. I don't mind a slow movie, but I am expecting a big payoff by the end. This just kept it tepid the whole way through. Great topic for the times we're living in, though.

Plan 75 is more restrictive than MAID in CA. At least you need to be at least 75. Anyone can ask to be served with MAID, if they want to die; even an able bodied man, living in government housing, signed up just for feeling hopeless that his life would improve. You want it America? No problem. If the marxist take over, this will be a reality. First they will introduce it as voluntary, then they will make it mandatory in the name of stopping climate change. Call it the modern version of the ChiComs' Cultural Revolution. Whether or not I am trolling is up to you.

I think my mild disappointment was how the sci-fi element is really only a backdrop for which to explore aging/community/etc. It's really a small movie in that way, and well done. I had been hoping for something larger though, exploring what this would mean for a society as a whole.

I thought the approach a touch cold, although I suppose the subject matter/situation warranted this. Some smart little touches, that set it apart from the average. Not something I would watch again, but very accomplished.

This is a sensitive film with a story idea that is actually utterly plausible. The film does make you reflect on how society treats older people and how the young might develop a more compassionate perspective toward them.
