Critics Consensus

Strong work from Benicio del Toro and Alicia Silverstone isn't enough to make up for Reptile's convoluted and ultimately underwhelming story.

Solid acting and an engaging mystery help Reptile keep you hooked despite its slow pacing and a plot that might be too complicated for its own good.

A pretty effective murder mystery... [Benicio Del Toro] has aged very nicely into this sort of role. Go to Full Review

Del Toro’s solid screen charisma can’t rescue Reptile, a derivative and lethargic thriller that rarely thrills as it tries and fails to build a case for itself as a meaningful iteration on the detective thrillers that it admires. Go to Full Review

The fallout from all this purposeful gloom isn't merely that nothing surprises us; even Del Toro's committed portrayal of a careful man's gathering disillusionment gets jammed up. Go to Full Review

Benicio Del Toro’s solid lead performance can’t prevent Reptile from being a boring, forgettable procedural. Go to Full Review

Hat tip to Del Toro and company. I like scripts that present a familiar formula in a mystery, and then proceed to have fun with the whodunit. Go to Full Review

Paul O @pjkeys 15h I always enjoy character studies over action and thrills and this movie does not disappoint while also providing the latter in measured doses. Each suspect continues to evolve as do the police officers of the local police force. The movie plods along at an even pace but that makes it that much more enjoyable, as it continues to shed its plot layers and access new depths of sleaze and betrayal as any good reptile worth its weight knows how to do. See more Luna D. @moonslvt Feb 18 The worst kind of trashy thriller. Despite an ensemble cast and admittedly strong performances from almost all of them, the writing falls extremely flat. Too much happening while at the same time being incredibly dull. Seems like they took every stereotype, threw it at the wall and whatever stuck, they just snuck into the movie, seemingly for no reason at all. Also the ending sucked. See more John H. @Hihner Feb 9 Worth your time. Del Toro was great as always and the cast was good. Trust me. See more Adéle L @Adele69 Jan 17 Benicio, Alicia and Ato and all the other actors were great and very immersive. HOWEVER... Justin Timberlake really ruined this movie for me, his acting is shallow and weak, stop f-ing up movies with his presence. See more Matthew C @mattjen77 Dec 28 Almost skipped based on reviews. Glad I watched anyway. Well worth the time. See more chad D. @Chaddie Dec 23 I think while they were going for realism they made it boring, and the slow burn effect fizzled it out.
