See more Christian M @chriss17eu Mar 10 I approached 'Romería' with high expectations after being impressed by 'Summer 1993' and 'Alcarràs' from Carla Simón. The premise — a young woman reconstructing her parents’ past through fragmented family memories marked by drugs and AIDS — feels promising. Yet despite Simón’s recognizable style—slow, intimate and observational—the story never truly engages me. The film looks authentic but remains emotionally distant. My connection weakens further with the protagonist, played by Llúcia Garcia. While I can imagine her future in Spanish cinema, her character gradually becomes irritating and difficult to connect with. A controversial symbolic relationship within the family also unsettles me, even if I understand its metaphorical intention. Ultimately, the film never makes me care about what happens. Despite moments of contemplative beauty, it feels like the weakest entry in Simón’s trilogy and one of the most frustrating viewing experiences I’ve had in recent years. You don't know who the people are, there's no good soundtrack, and you don't know if what's happening is real or just in the girl's head.
