It's one of those "eccentric rich people doing weird things" films, which has almost become its own cinematic subgenre. The script touches on several heavy topics like patriarchy, sexism, and incest, packed with uncomfortable scenes and situations. Not a single character seems sane, as everyone is unstable, so the performances are extremely convincing and stand out as the highlight of the movie. The issue is that it focuses so much on absurdity and exaggeration at the expense of keeping the story fluid and fully developing all the characters. I'm not even sure if I got the overall purpose of the film, as the ending was quite confusing to me. Not only a brilliant and flawless cast, an amazing photography work and one of the finest, dense writings of these last months if not years. Rosebush pruning is a vivid critic of flawlessness and perversion of the upper class that has the power to feel reasonable but strangely uneasy, to smell like rotten food, an object of desire that is no longer desired, one of the finest way of portraying the appalling nature of millionaires. A staging that feels like an artificial, custom-made telenovela made of disgusting people, what could be better and more powerful to better tell the disgusting truth? One can complain about the movie "trying so hard to shock you" on rotten tomatoes and the score will lower. That’s how this shit hole is. To me, Rosebush Pruning is an absolute must-watch like a few out there. A subject that respects itself and that remains itself to the end.
