Pasolini did a great job stabbing and lacerating the establishment of Italy, but it is something that only few people can endure. IF you can watch this and not stop it before getting to the end, you have a strong mind and a stomach of steel. A true litmus test for all cinephiles. Thankfully, I passed. Most have not. View at your own risk.
Probably the most fucked up film I've ever seen.
Pasolini was killed for this movie
Absolutely Awful. I’ve seen over 1400 movies and this might be the worst I’ve ever seen. No redeeming value, not even the end, which is all those youth being tortured and senselessly killed.
The shots are very beautiful. Other than that it's just shocks and bad porn.
First, I have had this movie forever and didn’t have the courage to watch it (I couldn’t get through the book). With that said, after watching it, I am completely embarrassed and totally disturbed. I am rarely offended - I can watch and/or hear almost anything, but this...I can’t even describe what I saw. The only word I’m left with is “why”. I understand having symbolism and trying to have a message, but my god, it could have been done in any other way. This movie has a complete lack of class or brilliance, it’s just brutal and unnecessary. I hated every minute of it. Please do yourself a favor and don’t see this because I promise, you can’t unsee it.
I want my 117 minutes back, this movie is a weak shocker with a weaker plot that serves only one purpose: wasting your time.
This was not an easy watch. It takes A LOT to make me squirm and this movie succeeded twice. The film is broken up into 4 parts: intro, orgies, shit and torture. None being very appealing. This isn't a movie that you can watch and try to put yourself in their shoes. You would have to turn it off. And thats not saying that you watch it with zero empathy... its natural to feel pain and sadness for the victim. The graphic depictions of the 4 sections of the film are filmed extremely well because its goal is to shock and it definitely does that. The acting is also superb as you truly feel hate and vitriol toward the captors, and sadness and pain (as stated above) for the victims. I really question whether all the actors/victims were at least 18 years old. Many appeared younger, which adds substantially to the disgust. It wasn't easy to play a victim for these actors because 80% of the time they're naked and of that, 50% of the time they're being abused or tortured. I hope it was worth it for them. It gets 3* not because its a decent story, but because it really accomplishes its goals (regardless of how much I disagree with them). That deserves praise because its not easy to disgust me, and this succeeded. Forget Martyrs, High Tension, Wolf Creek, Inside, Cannibal Holocaust, Them, etc... this is by far the craziest movie Ive ever seen. Congrats (I guess).
Extreme/"too far" content has its (necessary perhaps?) place in cinema but even so, artistic value needs to exist beyond just the content. In the case of Salo, any artistic value is diminished so far underneath the content that it's not even worth looking for. As depraved and disgusting as the movie may be, ultimately it's not that it's "too much" for audiences, it's that there's no justifiable reason to sit through it.
An overlong, boring exercise in depravity. How I fucking dreaded it when that annoying old hag tells another one of her stories. Overall, this isn't just worth your time, even if you're just looking for some mindless graphic violence-- this one was just pretty tame for me.
