Nathan J. @NathanDirector Mar 14 Rating: 7.7/10 ⭐️ I expected a standard Bollywood crime flick, but this gritty Indian spin on The Godfather trades the Italian mob aesthetic for raw Mumbai politics, and it totally works. The Director’s Eye: Varma uses intense close-ups and heavy shadows for a super moody vibe. Through my traditional lens, I loved the core themes of fierce family loyalty and protecting your community when the government is corrupt. Sarkar steps up to deliver justice when the system completely fails. Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan playing father and son brings authentic gravitas. The haunting score and repeating chant build insane tension. The Cuts: Since it follows The Godfather so closely, it’s predictable, so the middle part really dragged for me waiting for the betrayal. The female characters felt underwritten, mostly just reacting. Also, the experimental camera work (lots of weird, tilted angles and shaky shots) honestly made me dizzy during regular dialogue scenes. See more 04/07/2019 Amazing performance by Amitabh Bachan, this movie shows the ins and outs of how politics truly works in India and portrays it in a terrifically amazing cinematic manner. See more 05/21/2017 Great movie! ESP performances from Amitabh Bachchan and Amit Sadh!! See more 04/01/2016 This movie was an homage to The Godfather (1972) and I enjoyed all of it. It manage to strike that balance between being of the same vein as what it's adapting/admiring but also being its own thing. I'll probably watch the sequel because I heard it's just as good, and I am always up for more Bachchans. See more 10/27/2012 A great adaptation of THE GODFATHER! See more 03/28/2011 I was impressed. Godfather in mumbaiya ishtyle. I would say, Amitabh bachhan did an impressive job of an ol'timer (marlon brando). And Abhishek too. the stubble on his face, which he never tends to remove, added to the persona. Perfect suited father son duo who could have reprised the originals. See more Read all reviews
