...a thoroughly worthless family film that squanders a decent premise from start to finish. Go to Full Review

It's refreshing to see images that are uncommon in mainstream kids movies, especially when this Chinese creativity is so full of colour and vitality. Go to Full Review

TheMovieSearch R @TheMovieSearch Oct 1, 2026 The Secret of the Magic Gourd is one of those movies that made me stop and ask, what kind of movie was this? I kept thinking about the Disney name attached to it and wondering how this ever became part of the franchise. The entire concept of the magic gourd felt ridiculous to me, and I struggled to find anything about it that was genuinely fun, creative, or entertaining. The story felt weak, and the development never came together in a way that made sense to me. Everything seemed to become more chaotic as it went along, and I could not really wrap my head around what I was watching. I kept thinking, wow, this is Disney, but then I would immediately think, wow, this is something I have never seen from Disney, and not in a good way. Ultimately, The Secret of the Magic Gourd was a complete disaster for me. It is definitely one of the weaker Disney films I have watched. I expected something fun and creative, but instead I found myself frustrated by the concept, story, and execution. See more Dec 5, 2021 Un film familiale sans prétention avec une magie incroyable serte se film ne peux pas plaire a tout le monde mes comme a dit Brian Webster (une créativité chinoise est si pleine de couleurs et de vitalité) See more Nov 14, 2021 A Chinese movie with special effects done by Centro, which is based in Hong Kong, and dubbed by Disney for English speaking audiences. This film is about a young boy who learns that doing the work yourself is more fulfilling than having a magic gourd do all the work for you. The plot had the right idea, but wasn't paced very well and didn't set up the plot points well enough for them to pay off later. The acting is wooden at best, though that may be a cultural barrier. The Magic Gourd was computer animated and looked like a cheap Mr. Potato Head. The special effects do not get past a cartoonish look. Corbin Bleu, from The High School Musical movies, voices the Gourd and does alright with what he was given. I do not think this movie is worth your time, skip it. See more Mar 23, 2020 This movie scarred me as a child. The Guord is ugly as hell. The part where he splits himself in half gave me nightmares. I found a picture of this monstrosity on google images, and it unearthed flashbacks I never knew I had. Please, spare the minds of your innocent children. Do not let them watch this cursed film. See more Jun 5, 2016 a total kiddy pic & Disney trying to capitalize on Asian anime only made it 25 minutes into it-yuck See more Apr 29, 2012 This is at least better than watching Stephen Chow's "CJ7" which was released a year later after this film by about a notch, especially in terms of its mature narrative and character development. My Rating: 3.5/5 stars; Grade: B; Gesture: One Thumb Up; Status: Somewhat Good (Fresh). See more Read all reviews
