Critics Consensus

Elevating the Dashwood sisters' relationship to the forefront of Jane Austen's classic tale of courtship, Georgia Oakley's Sense and Sensibility may not best previous adaptations but achieves a wistful identity of its own.

Sense and Sensibility is a story of memorable characters in which every role, big or small, can stand out. But Sense and Sensibility is a movie in which almost no one does. Go to Full Review

...a tale this bound up with love and money might have fascinating things to say to twenty-somethings still living with their parents and reportedly averse to relationships. Mostly, though, the movie just gives them actors their own age to look at. Go to Full Review

The humour, like the mossy tones and wintry light of this version, is more muted than that of Lee’s film, but Marianne delivers many of the most satisfying lines. Go to Full Review

While the fresh touches are modest and there's nothing radically new here, this is a spirited and enjoyable adaptation that makes its runtime of over two hours fly by. Go to Full Review

Maybe it won’t supplant your favorite version, but it’s an entertaining, well-crafted take that more than stands on its own, as much a springboard for those involved as it is a delight to watch. Go to Full Review

L 1 day ago I so wanted to enjoy this film based on a beloved novel- but I wish I hadn't watched it. The only good things about this adaptation of such a beautiful, well-crafted story were 1) some of the casting 2) some of the scenery and cinematography. The plot of was terrible- lacking so much of the complexities in the Austen novel, with unnecessary additions made by the writers. The characters were often over-exaggerated, or just stretched to point of being ridiculous. So much of the costuming looked like something from an Urban Outfitters catalog. Marianne was more obnoxious than emotional, and my GOD could her hair have been washed more than once? And finally, because I'm tired of typing, I'm even more tired of Hollywood adding their modern gender fluidity twists to classic tales- Mr. Palmer should have been played by a biological MAN because he was, in fact, a husband and FATHER in the book. See more Gia E @giaenri 9 hrs ago Sense and Sensibility is a truly whimsical and delightful film in all its ways! Daisy Edgar Jones steals the show as Elinor, delivering a beautiful performance all throughout. Fiona Shaw also delivers an amazing comedical performance as Mrs. Jennings! Marianne and Elinor both had very different journeys when it comes to romance - but the movie showed us how that journey can be grueling and hard and painful. Sense and Sensibility is not the *best* Jane Austen adaptation, but it’s one that really does stay with you! See more David L @davidonfilm 11 hrs ago Sense and Sensibility is a charming new take on a timeless classic. Georgia Oakley makes a solid adaptation on Jane Austen's novel that's not as strong as previous Austen films but mostly elevated by its delightful cast, Daisy Edgar-Jones, breakout Esme Creed-Miles and Fiona Shaw.
