Critics Consensus

The Strangers: Prey at Night may appeal to fans of the original who've been jonesing for a sequel, but its thin story and ironic embrace of genre tropes add up to a bloody step back.

Grimly efficient sequel to the 2008 shocker The Strangers. Go to Full Review

With its infuriatingly dim-witted characters and generic slasher movie feel, The Strangers: Prey At Night is a surprisingly tame and forgettable rehash. Go to Full Review

No tension, no drama, no interest, no scares, no emotional involvement and no motive. No chance. Go to Full Review

The movie is a wash of reprocessed horror gimmicks which we’ve all seen over and over. Go to Full Review

Prey at Night makes the audience feel everything it wants us to, and what's more, it outdoes the original in every way, making for an unexpected, satisfying slasher - a rarity to be sure. Go to Full Review

Allyssa Deleon Apr 21 Hated it, walked out. See more Theodore F. @Sirhotness 7h Definitely a disappointment from the 2008 original but surprisingly had some entertaining moments. The characters that make a lot of stupid decisions that’s always annoying. See more acsdoug D @acsdoug 10h I felt none of the dread, none of the sense of impending doom, that I felt in the 2008 version. This just seems like another in a long line of dime a dozen psycho slasher movies. The fact that there are three psycho slashers is a little unique, but not enough to recommend. By the way, what happened to the gun? The victims had a gun, then one second later they didn't have a gun. Huh? See more Shristhi M @Shri_M 14h The entire Strangers movie series feels like a complete waste and terribly made. The movies try very hard to copy the aesthetic and tension of classic slasher films, but instead of feeling gritty or authentic, they come off as slow, empty, and artificial. There is barely any real plot, character development, or meaningful tension. Most of the runtime is filled with characters making unbelievably dumb decisions while the story crawls forward at an exhausting pace. Horror classics like Halloween, Friday the 13th, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and Scream had characters and atmosphere that still feel real decades later. The Strangers movies feel like they’re trying to imitate those vibes without understanding what made them work in the first place. It feels like the audience has simply lost time they could have spent watching far better horror films. Honestly, unless the writers and directors drastically improve the storytelling, the series probably doesn’t need more installments. See more Matt H. @hodnick Mar 4 Okay follow up, plays the gore up.
