"Superfly" escapes superficiality thanks largely to strong performances from Jackson; Jason Mitchell as Priest's workmanlike partner, Eddie, and Michael Kenneth Williams as Priest's mentor, Scatter.

Though buoyed by some good performances and heaps of style, Superfly nevertheless scans more as a snazzy long-form video than a meaty drama.

Is the Superfly remake better than its predecessor? Only time will tell. One thing's for certain: it's exemplary exploitation, and the most essential piece of pure entertainment 2018 has offered up thus far.

Superfly has a long way to go to be considered a great movie, but it's not a particularly bad one, either.

The new Superfly isn't a great work of artistry or of cheap thrills - it's so in between it's practically bourgeois - but in the swagger department, it just squeaks by.

SuperFly isn't challenging or groundbreaking, but at least it lives up to its title.

Alex Tse's script adheres to the basic outline of the original while sprinkling in some fresh touches. Director X nimbly moves the various chess pieces of the plot about while showing a distinctive flair for outlandish action sequences.

How Youngblood Priest deals with the Man this time around may be the stuff of purest revenge fantasy, but it also touches a nerve that is hard to dismiss as anything but real.
June 12, 2018
A bizarrely watchable and often funny confluence of thug life and B-movie campiness.
June 12, 2018
[A] grungy, fairly entertaining remake...
June 12, 2018
Superfly is a visual treat that embellishes Director X's signature kaleidoscopic visuals with an uncanny knack for storytelling.

The nuance-free script, by Alex Tse, sometimes results in an unintentional laugh, but the film overall is more entertaining than not.

The upshot: this incarnation of Superfly proves to be a riveting, slick and pulse-pounding reboot that easily blows away the original!
