Director X...can't seem to differentiate between the strip-club aesthetics of a rap video and the demands of a full-length feature film.

The whole thing plays like a fancy dress parody of a crime movie, except nobody seems to be having much fun.

The new Superfly seems...like an embarrassing throwback.

For all its tossed-off flash, "Superfly" goes beyond the mere intricacy of its audacious plotting to suggest the cruelty, the horror, and the deceit at the heart of the American body politic.
June 15, 2018
For all its pulpy, genre-movie intentions, SuperFly is virtually crippled by its own ludicrousness.
June 15, 2018
It's really stylish and has great gloss and energy about it...This definitely has the look and a lot of the very knowing trappings of music video culture.

"Superfly" escapes superficiality thanks largely to strong performances from Jackson; Jason Mitchell as Priest's workmanlike partner, Eddie, and Michael Kenneth Williams as Priest's mentor, Scatter.

A more seasoned director of narrative features might've figured of how to sustain these high points. But Lutz careens among tones like a chromed-out Cadillac Fleetwood Eldorado that's had its brake lines cut.

Superfly has a long way to go to be considered a great movie, but it's not a particularly bad one, either.
June 14, 2018
The new Superfly isn't a great work of artistry or of cheap thrills - it's so in between it's practically bourgeois - but in the swagger department, it just squeaks by.
June 13, 2018
It feels like the reason for remaking "Super Fly" got lost along the way.
June 13, 2018
The film's strip-club-and-slo-mo aesthetic is yanked right out of any number of hip-hop videos - and also about as deep.
June 13, 2018
SuperFly isn't challenging or groundbreaking, but at least it lives up to its title.
June 13, 2018
Did the original "Super Fly" need to be remade? Not really.
June 13, 2018
The gold rings and watches, the champagne in the club under a falling rain of bills, the rich velvet of Priest's double-breasted evening jackets-this movie is all about beautiful, pricey surfaces.

You'll have fun, but you won't be challenged.

In this misbegotten update, Travis Jackson is upstaged by his upswept hair. If hair could act, the Jackson tresses would be up for a follicular Oscar. Too bad Director X gets lost in ambitions he has no idea how to execute. What a mess.
June 13, 2018
Jackson's uninspiring performance only serves to highlight the film's other weaknesses, like the corny aphorisms that pepper its dialogue and the much-hyped soundtrack...

Alex Tse's script adheres to the basic outline of the original while sprinkling in some fresh touches. Director X nimbly moves the various chess pieces of the plot about while showing a distinctive flair for outlandish action sequences.

How Youngblood Priest deals with the Man this time around may be the stuff of purest revenge fantasy, but it also touches a nerve that is hard to dismiss as anything but real.
